Welcome to Cub Scout Pack 457

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Cub Scout Pack 457, and thank you for your interest in Scouting!

For over 50 years, Pack 457 has proudly served families in Half Hollow Hills and surrounding communities. Boys and girls in grades K–5 are welcome to join Pack 457.

We typically hold one Pack meeting each month, usually on a Friday, although the day and location may vary depending on the activity. Meetings are generally held at the HHH Library or Vanderbilt Elementary School, and sometimes at Caledonia Park when the weather is nice. Dens may also meet separately. Please contact us to find out about attending an event.

Throughout the year, we offer additional activities and events, and families can participate in whichever ones interest them. Some of our past adventures include teaching the Scouts how to fish, marching in the Huntington Memorial Day and St. Patrick’s Day parades, visiting the American Air Power Museum and Old Bethpage Village Restoration, touring the Suffolk Police K-9 unit and U.S. Coast Guard station, and learning archery with professional instructors. We also enjoy winter activities such as skiing and snowboarding.

We try to plan around sports and other commitments, and many activities are designed around the Scouts’ interests. Attendance at activities is optional, but we encourage everyone to attend Pack meetings whenever possible.

We hope you’ll come see what Pack 457 is all about! You are welcome to attend any meeting or event with no obligation.

• New Scouts will pay dues through the BeAScout online application.

⚜️ Returning Scouts: $170

• Returning Scouts may the Pack directly by using Venmo @DixHillsPack457 (venmo.com/DixHillsPack457) or by check payable to "Pack 457".

• Add $15 if you would like to add Scout Life magazine

DUES INCLUDE:

● A Scouting America Scout ID (formerly BSA / Boy Scouts of America), good for a Scout's entire career in Scouting.

● A subscription to SCOUT LIFE magazine (included with new applications only)

● Insurance for all Scout-related activities

● Access to our private Facebook Pack page photo albums and event announcements

● Pack, Den, District and Long Island Council activities

UNITS EXPLAINED

Pack = All Scouts from Pack 457

Den = Grade specific activities from Pack 457.

*Dens need leaders, please consider volunteering to help run a Den for your child.

District = We are part of the Matinecock district, which includes all Scout units in Smithtown and Huntington townships

Long Island Scout Council = Nassau and Suffolk County Scouting America

Scouting America = National Scouting

UNIFORMS

Cub Scouts from Pack 457 are children in grades Kindergarten through fifth and their uniforms are blue. Older Scouts in grades 6-12 are in Troops and wear khaki uniform shirts and green pants.

3) CLASS A UNIFORM - Is a formal Scout uniform consisting of a Scout collared shirt and Scout pants. Scouts are also encouraged to wear a neckerchief. Scouts may also wear a Scout hat, neckerchief slide, socks, belt, and more.

It is expected that Scout Class A Uniforms are worn at all Pack meetings for for public events, with exceptions. New Scouts may attend meetings before purchasing uniforms.

Each Scouting unit has different rules about uniforms. For Pack 457, we suggest Scouts wear the full Class A uniform, but for the younger children, a Class A Scout shirt alone is acceptable. We also understand that some children are may require flexibility with what they wear, therefore for some children, as Class B shirt is sufficient. Also, uniforms tend to be on the pricier side, and children grow rapidly. We do have some donated uniforms for Scouts to borrow, but the smaller sizes are usually limited.

CLASS B UNIFORM

On less formal occasions, Scouts may also wear a Class B uniform, consisting of any Scouting related graphic tee shirt, long sleeve shirt, or sweatshirt.

Due to successful fundraising, Scouts in Pack 457 are provided with official Pack 457 Class B T-Shirts.
